William May has written music for festivals, recitals, competitions, workshops, and weddings. May's music is performed around the world. In 2021, May was commissioned by Dr. Shauna Thompson, Dr. Corey Mackey, & Texas Christian University, to premier an original work entitled “On Paper: Duo for Flute & Clarinet” at the 2022 Texas Music Educator’s Association Convention, in San Antonio, TX.
May began his formal studies, at the age of 9 in Georgia - USA. His composition "Jaguar Pride" was selected as the official Alma Mater of his high school in 2006. May went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in music from Columbus State University in 2010, and in 2014 a Master’s Degree from Georgia State University.
William May's early work, “Fanfare for Six Horns”, premiered at his alma mater, Columbus State and became 2nd place National Prizewinner in the 2009 Music Teachers National Association Competition for Young Composers. May's work "The Music Box: Fantasy for Orchestra" reached finalist in the inaugural 2022 Juilliard Composing Inclusion Initiative and was recognized by the Sphinx Organization and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2023 his work achieved finalist with EarShot Composers Initiative, in collaboration with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and American Composers Orchestra.
As an educator, May has devoted teaching to at-risk youth and exceptional children in Title I School Programs. In his role as Director of Choral Activities, for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. High School (Stonecrest, GA - USA), he orchestrated the Concert Chorale to perform Damon Dandridge’s “I Know I’ve Been Changed” at the Georgia State Capital for the Governor. May went on to co-lead the Mighty Lion Kings Of Halftime Band marching in the historic NBC Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade performing artists Beyoncé's “Homecoming” tunes.
In 2016, May created the WARMAY Music Company (formerly WARM Productions), providing music creation, publishing and pedagogy. Spearheading artistic initiatives, WARMAY Music Company produced the award-winning album “Trust & Believe” with Atlanta-based Gospel Music artist, Chris Brunson; collaborated with Emily Schuster and the Children's Trust Fund of Lansing, Michigan (featured at the State Capital C.A.P.A.D. Rally); and in addition, composed his debut EP entitled “Moments” (Released, Fall 2019). WARMAY Co. has clients throughout the world and continues to establish itself today as a reliable supplier of quality musical content.
Currently, William May is writing for performers and educators Alphonso Counts (Towers High School Symphonic Band) and James Miller (Flute), along with a commission with clarinetist Mark Allen, Co-sponsored by the Memphis Black Arts Alliance. William May's works are performanced across the USA, including the Seattle Symphony Horns and the Atlanta Contemporary Ensemble.
